1 - It promotes glycolysis
In animal models, berberine supplementation leads to the activation of AMPK. This protein kinase interacts with a variety of enzymes to promote catabolism, including glycolysis. This reaction allows the transformation of sugar into energy, called ATP.
2 - It impacts glucose uptake by cells
AMPK activation also improves glucose uptake by cells through the stimulation of transmembrane transporters such as GLUT-4. In this way, glucose present in the blood can more easily enter the cells, directly affecting blood sugar levels.
3 - It acts on insulin sensitivity
Berberine also induces the activation of the protein kinase PKC, which influences the number of insulin receptors on cell membranes. This makes cells more “sensitive to insulin.” Berberine may also contribute to insulin sensitivity through its effects on another regulatory enzyme, SIRT1.
4 - It increases mitochondrial function
An animal study revealed that SIRT1 activation by berberine helps improve mitochondrial function (in part by increasing mitochondrial synthesis) and, consequently, supports the regulation of blood sugar and blood lipid levels. Mitochondria are considered the “powerhouses” of our cells.
